Visiting Students

Deutsche Version

Basic information:

As a rule, visiting students can register for lectures only. They may attend other courses as long as degree students are not impaired in their studies. Prior to registration, please contact the responsible member of the teaching staff to inquire whether you may attend and obtain the approval in writing. On principle, visiting students cannot register for any language courses; for exceptions, please visit the website of the Sprachenzentrum.

Visiting students are excluded from registering for any courses in the degree programs human medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine.

Upon registration visiting students do not become members of the University and cannot take any examinations; an exception will be made for students registered at other universities who – according to a legal regulation or an agreement between the universities – register as visiting students for the purpose of completing those parts of their degree program at LMU Munich that are offered here.

Visiting students select the courses they want to register for from the LMU online course catalog.

The first registration is available to visiting students as well as the continuation of registration and re-registration.

  • Students can apply for the first registration if they intend to register for the first time as visiting students at LMU Munich.
  • Students can apply for the continuation of registration if they were registered as visiting students during the immediately preceding semester.
  • Students can apply for the re-registration if they were already registered as visiting students at LMU Munich in the past and after taking a break for one or more semesters intend to register again at a later date as visiting students.

1. First registration:

On principle, students must apply for the first registration in person during the specified registration period. As far as registration by an authorized representative is concerned, the relevant legal regulations apply. The authorized representative must prove his or her identity by presenting an official photo ID and a written authorization at the time of registration at LMU Munich.

Visiting students select the courses they want to register for from the LMU online course catalog called Online-Vorlesungsverzeichnis LSF. The individual courses must be entered on the registration form as well as on the identification form with the official course number and the number of hours per week per semester.

Registration and identification forms for the first registration

a) The following documents must be presented for the first registration:

  • the entirely completed and signed registration and identification forms
  • the higher education entrance qualification in the original
  • a valid personal ID card or passport

b) Aside from this, gifted students must present the following:

  • the entirely completed and signed registration and identification forms
  • a valid personal ID card or passport
  • a written confirmation by the school currently attended stating the type of higher education entrance qualification pursued
  • a letter of recommendation by the school principal which must include a detailed description of the coursework completed thus far as well as a competent estimate concerning the anticipated successful participation in the courses to be taken at the University
  • a letter of recommendation by the dean of the respective faculty which offers the courses entered on the registration form
  • the parental consent confirming that the student may register as a visiting student if the student has not completed his or her 18th birthday

After the presented documents are verified, you will receive a temporary identification card. Within four weeks, the permanent identification card will be mailed to you accompanied by a letter with the necessary information on the continuation of registration and re-registration procedures for the following semesters as well as your registration number, the payment details and the payment deadlines.

Please note: The permanent identification card will be mailed to you and entitles you to attend courses corresponding to the fee amount you paid for the total number of hours per week per semester. On the identification card mailed to you, you must enter the official course number as well as the respective number of hours per week per semester of the courses you selected at the time of your first registration. You must personally sign the identification card and always carry it with you as proof of your registration while attending your courses.

c) Dates of the first registration:

d) Location of the first registration:

  • Main University Building, Lecture Hall F 107 (Please follow the signs placed at the main entrance.)

2. Continuation of registration

In order to apply for the continuation of registration in the formal manner required and by the specified deadline, all you need to do is transfer the

progressive fee (the amount is determined by the number of hours per week per semester registered for)

and state your registration number. We will mail your identification card to you on time before the start of the lecture period.

Please note: The identification card will be mailed to you and entitles you to attend courses corresponding to the fee amount you transfered for the total number of hours per week per semester. On the identification card mailed to you, you must enter the official course number as well as the respective number of hours per week per semester of the courses you selected. Important note on the continuation of registration procedure:
Due to technical and administrative reasons, the continuation of registration is currently only available to those visiting students who are registered as visiting students for the Winter Semester 2018/19 at LMU Munich.

3. Re-registration

For visiting students who already registered for the first time as visiting students at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and who do not apply for the continuation of registration for the following semester (e.g. because they want to take a break for one or more semesters) but intend to register again at a later date as visiting students, there continues to be an automated re-registration procedure which is similar to the one for the continuation of registration:

In order to apply for re-registration in the formal manner required and by the specified deadline, you must transfer the

progressive fee (the amount is determined by the number of hours per week per semester registered for)

and state your registration number. We will mail your identification card to you on time before the start of the lecture period, as is the case with the continuation of registration.

Please note: The identification card will be mailed to you and entitles you to attend courses corresponding to the fee amount you transfered for the total number of hours per week per semester. On the identification card mailed to you, you must enter the official course number as well as the respective number of hours per week per semester of the courses you selected. You must personally sign the identification card and always carry it with you as proof of your registration while attending your courses.

The procedures introduced here for the continuation of registration and re-registration do not apply to applicants

  • who were never registered at LMU Munich
  • who want to register for individual courses as visiting students in the study program for senior citizens or as degree students.

These procedures also do not apply to

  1. gifted students
  2. as well as visiting students who are simultaneously registered at another university and need the study program for visiting students in order to complete their studies according to the study and examination regulations of their home university. (Please submit a confirmation issued by the examination office of that university.)

Since these students are exempt from paying any fees, they must continue to register in person each semester.

Applicants to whom the procedures for the continuation of registration and re-registration do not apply must continue to register in person.
(see 1. First registration)
